The biohybrid systems laboratory (https://www.biohybridlab.org/) of Sung-Jin Park, Ph.D. is housed in the Coulter Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Institute of Technology and Emory University School of Medicine, ranked #1 and #3 in the USA among undergraduate and graduate BME programs, respectively. The laboratory is highly multidisciplinary with primary interests in cardiac and skeletal muscle engineering. We aim to elucidate (1) how biological systems coordinate the hierarchical structures and functions of their individual components in order to produce emergent physical behaviors such as morphogenesis, migration, and contraction and (2) how disrupting this coordination potentiates disease. Based on the candidate’s research background and interests, the fellow would have the opportunity to work on potential projects: (1) modeling inherited muscle diseases through the use of induced pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes carrying patient-specific mutations and (2) developing interactive biohybrid robotic systems capable of recapitulating tissue- and organ-level coordinated functions by harnessing cardiac and skeletal muscle systems. The project will amalgamate molecular biology, muscle mechano/electro-biology, optics, and robotics, which span remote disciplines that previously have never been investigated together in a single system.
Applicants must hold a Ph.D. and/or MD degree (or the equivalent). Hands-on experience with the development of in vitro cell/tissue models or stem cell research is required. Additional experience in live cell imaging, cardiac and skeletal muscle tissue engineering, stem cell engineering, gene editing, molecular biology, single molecule fluorescence in situ hybridization (smFISH), optogenetics, microfabrication, tissue scaffold design and engineering, massive data and image processing, and computational modeling is desirable.
